Blackcap

Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla)

This bird eats fruit and insects, and in recent cold winters it is not uncommon on garden feeders. The male has a black cap on his head and female a rusty brown. Placing apples or fat feeders in trees will often attract them. They nest low down in vegetation laying 4 - 6 eggs which hatch after about 11 days.

They are best photographed from a hide. We photographed several of these from our house and some were taken from our own hide in Clumber Park Nottinghamshire. They don’t sit still for long so we used fast shutter speeds.
