Great Skua

Skua - Great (Stercorarius Skua)

Almost the bird of prey of the sea world, this bird feeds on fish which it occasionally catches it’s self or more often scavenges or obtains by piracy from other birds. It will also kill other sea birds. It recently spread from Iceland and the Faeroes to North Scotland and Scandinavia. We recently photographed this near the Old Man of Hoy Orkney.

Locally in the Orkney Islands this is known as the Bonxie.

It flys very fast through the air, so we typically used a shutter speed of 1/3000 of a second with an f stop of 8 or higher and a 1,600 iso on the Nikon D3s with a Nikon 500mm prime lens and a 1.7x tele converter.
